Exercise For Older Adults

While it is true that everyone should exercise to stay fit and healthy it is especially important for older adults. But what kind of exercise for older adults is safe?
Depending on your fitness level, exercise for older adults should be low impact. The older you are the more important it is that you are exercising on a regular basis.
Exercise will keep your blood moving, your muscles stretched, and your joints moving freely. It will also keep you trim. The older you get the harder it is for your body to carry excess weight and it also put you at a much higher risk of having other life threatening illnesses.
So what is the exercise for older adults you should be doing?
There are a few different ways you can go. If you have a gym membership or it is warm outside and you have access to swimming pools then that would be a fantastic way to exercise. Swimming is not only low impact but it also builds muscle because it is a resistance training exercise.
If you have problems with your legs or knees then this will really help you stay strong and healthy without putting unnecessary strain on your legs.
Another route to go would be to ride a bike. Bike riding is low impact and good for your entire body. However if you have problems with your knees then this might not be the best solution for you.
Pilates is another good exercise for older adults to take part in. Pilates is another low impact workout that relies heavily on stretching to keep your body young and free. What I really like about Pilates is that when you first start using it you can do the modified exercises until your body gets strong enough to do the regular ones. This makes it really good if you are older or very overweight.
